Turfgrasses used to construct sports
playing surfaces require a high degree of utility. This can range from the need for the
uniform roll of the golf ball on a green to the wear resistance needed to match the
pounding from horse hoofs on polo fields.
The adaptation of turfgrass species to
different forms of sport events is somewhat correlated to its intended height of clipping.
Those fields or surfaces which require a high degree precision are often mowed closely, at
times less than one-half inch in height.
The average sports field is left
somewhat higher from one-half to one inch or greater. Fields which require rapid growth
and recovery are often mowed at much higher heights
